Causative Verbs

Causative verbs are used to indicate that one person causes another person to do something for them. The true causative verbs are: have, get and make. NOTE: Causative verbs are normally used with people, although things can sometimes be “made to do something” also. Make, Have, and Get can be used to express the idea that “X” causes “Y” to do something. When they are used as a causative verbs, their meanings are similiar but noot identical.

Have

We use causative have when arranging for someone to do something for us.

Have is followed by the simple form of a verb, not an infinitive.

Have give the idea that ‘X’ request ‘Y’ to do something.

Active Have.

S + HAVE  +  O + INF

e.g:

I have my syster do my homework

Passive Have

S +  HAVE  + O + V3

e.g:

I have my homework done.

Get

Get is use to persuade someone to do something to us.

Get is followed by an infinitive.

Get gives the idea that ‘X’ persuade ‘Y’ to do something.

Active  GET

S  +  GET  +  O  +  TO INF

e.g:

He gets john to brush shoes.

Passive  GET

S  +  GET  +  O  +  V3

e.g:

He got his shoes brushed

LET

Let .is use to give a permission to someone else to do something.

Let is followed by the simple form of averb, not an infinitive.

Active let.

S +  LET + O + INF

e.g:

I let my friend borrow my dictionary

Passive LET.

S + LET + O + V3

e.g:

I let my dictionary borrowed.

MAKE

Make is used to force someone.

Make is followed by the simple form of a verb, not an infinitive.

Make gives the idea that ‘X’ forces ‘Y’ to do something.

 Active make.

S + MAKE + O + INF

e.g:

She made her children do their homework.

Passive make.

S + MAKE +O+V3

e.g:

She made their homework done.
